More than 18,000 customers are without electricity in and around Corpus Christi, the region’s main utility reported at 3:50 p.m. local time. AEP Texas serves more than 1 million households and businesses in the immediate storm zone.

Most of the 300 reported outages are concentrated in residential areas off Corpus Christi Bay, along Highway 358, and within a broad zone south of the Navy’s air station.

AEP’s interactive map groups the outages in clusters and uses red and orange shading to indicate where the most customers are affected.

The utility is using its social media feeds to keep customers updated.

On Twitter, it reported that 2,000 backup workers had arrived to assist with service restoration once it’s been declared safe, which could be the middle of next week.

And on Facebook, one neighboring municipality sought to dispel rumors that AEP had begun to shut off power preemptively.
